Prepare with confidence

MIFS examinations are designed to be earned. Preparation is structured, transparent and grounded in the official curriculum for each programme. This is how candidates study, practise and sit under proctored conditions.

How to prepare

A disciplined path to the exam

Every MIFS credential rests on a published curriculum and a defined exam format. Preparation follows the same sequence, whatever the programme.

Confirm the requirement

Read the programme page and the official curriculum. Understand the format, the duration and, where applicable, the level structure and experience requirement before you commit to a window.

Build a study plan

Work back from your exam date. Allocate study hours across each curriculum area, weight the higher-value topics, and leave time for revision and full mock exams.

Study the curriculum

Move through the official readings area by area. Use approved prep resources or structured self-study, and record your progress against the learning outcomes.

Practise and rehearse

Apply what you have learned through the practice question bank, then sit timed mock exams under conditions that mirror the real assessment.

The official curriculum

Standards set the syllabus

The MIFS Board of Standards owns each curriculum, the learning outcomes and the pass marks. Candidates prepare against a single authoritative source for every programme.

  • Defined learning outcomes. Each curriculum area states what a candidate must be able to do, not merely recall. Preparation maps directly to those outcomes.
  • Weightings published. Topic weightings show where the marks sit, so study time can be allocated deliberately rather than evenly.
  • Reviewed annually. The curriculum is updated to reflect current standards and market practice, and the version for each exam window is stated in advance.
  • Ethics throughout. The Code of Ethics and the seven Standards of Professional Conduct are examinable across the charter and specialist programmes, not treated as an afterthought.

Practice question bank

Practise against the outcomes

The official practice question bank lets candidates test their command of each curriculum area under realistic timing, with worked explanations that reinforce the reasoning behind every answer.

Mapped to the curriculum

Questions are tagged to learning outcomes, so candidates can target weak areas rather than working through material at random.

Worked explanations

Each item includes a full rationale. The bank is a study tool, not only a scoring tool — the explanation matters as much as the mark.

Progress tracking

Performance is recorded by topic over time, giving candidates an evidence-based view of readiness before they book a window.

Format-aware

Item styles reflect each exam — item sets for the charter, applied build tasks for modelling, scenario questions for risk and ethics.

Calibrated difficulty

Questions are written and reviewed to the same standard as the examination, so practice scores are a fair signal, not an inflated one.

Regularly refreshed

The bank is expanded and revised alongside the curriculum so candidates always practise against current standards.

Mock exams

Rehearse under Sentinel conditions

Timed mock exams replicate the real assessment, including the environment. Candidates arrive on exam day having already sat the format under conditions that mirror live proctoring.

  • Full-length and timed. Mocks run to the same duration as the live exam for each programme, so pacing is practised, not guessed.
  • Sentinel environment. Candidates experience ID verification, environment lockdown and invigilation before it counts, removing surprises on the day.
  • Scored to standard. Results are reported against curriculum areas, showing exactly where more work is needed.
  • Live build for CFMA. The modelling mock is sat in a live spreadsheet environment, exactly as the build exam requires.

Study planning

Build a plan that holds

Most successful candidates study across weeks or months, not days. A written plan turns a large curriculum into a manageable schedule.

Set the exam window

Choose a window that gives realistic preparation time. The charter and risk programmes span months per level; the single-exam credentials still reward steady study over cramming.

Estimate the hours

Use the guided study hours as a baseline — for example, roughly 80 hours for the sustainable finance certificate and around 90 for the data and AI certificate — and adjust for your background.

Schedule by topic

Divide the curriculum into weekly blocks weighted by exam value. Front-load the heaviest areas so the difficult material is revisited more than once.

Review and rehearse

Reserve the final weeks for question practice, full mock exams and targeted revision of any topic where your practice scores fall short.

Preparation should mirror the exam. A candidate who has studied the published curriculum, practised against the outcomes and rehearsed under proctored conditions is ready — and the credential means the same for everyone who holds it.

Prep partners and self-study

Choose how you learn

The Institute publishes the curriculum and the assessment; candidates are free to prepare through structured self-study or through approved preparation providers.

Approved prep partners

Approved providers deliver structured courses, tuition and revision aligned to the official curriculum and learning outcomes. Approval sets a consistent quality bar; the Institute does not itself deliver commercial tuition. Candidates should confirm that any course maps to the current curriculum version for their exam window.

Guided self-study

The official curriculum, the practice question bank and full-length mock exams are sufficient to prepare independently. Self-study candidates set their own schedule, track progress against the learning outcomes, and rehearse the format before sitting. Candidate Affiliate membership is free while studying and supports the process.
