CFMA® — Certified Financial Modelling Analyst
An applied credential for practitioners who build. The CFMA is assessed by a single proctored build examination in a live spreadsheet environment, where candidates construct a working financial model from a blank workbook. It certifies not what a candidate can recall, but what a candidate can produce.
A credential earned by building, not by answering
The Certified Financial Modelling Analyst (CFMA) is the Institute's applied programme in financial modelling. It is designed for professionals whose work depends on the disciplined construction of models: analysts in investment banking, private equity, corporate finance, financial planning and analysis, and equity research.
Where multiple-choice examinations test recognition, the CFMA tests construction. In a single proctored session, the candidate builds a live model in a spreadsheet environment — an integrated three-statement model, a discounted cash flow valuation, a leveraged buyout structure, and a set of scenario and sensitivity outputs. The assessment is of the model itself: its structure, its accuracy, its integrity, and its clarity.
The CFMA carries no prerequisite. A candidate may sit the examination without first holding another MIFS credential. It is conferred on those who demonstrate, under proctored conditions, that they can produce professional-standard work.

What you'll master
The examination covers the core building blocks of applied financial modelling. Candidates are expected to construct each from first principles within the session.
- ✓Integrated three-statement model. Build a linked income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement that balances and flows correctly across forecast periods.
- ✓Discounted cash flow valuation. Derive free cash flow, apply a defensible discount rate, and value a business on an intrinsic basis with terminal-value treatment.
- ✓Leveraged buyout structure. Model a transaction with sources and uses, a debt schedule, cash sweeps and a returns waterfall.
- ✓Scenario and sensitivity analysis. Construct switchable scenarios and sensitivity tables that stress key assumptions and surface the drivers of value.
- ✓Model structure and integrity. Apply consistent layout, clear separation of inputs and calculations, and checks that prevent and detect errors.
- ✓Clarity and auditability. Produce a model another professional can read, follow and rely upon — the mark of work fit for decision-making.
The exam & how it's proctored
A single sitting of approximately four hours in a live spreadsheet environment. The candidate begins from a prepared brief and constructs a working model to specification. The output is the model, and the model is what is graded.
A live build, not recall
The candidate works in a real spreadsheet under time. There are no multiple-choice questions. Marks reflect the accuracy, structure and integrity of the model produced.
Meridian Sentinel proctoring
Every sitting is invigilated by the Institute's Meridian Sentinel system: verified identity, live human and AI invigilation, environment lockdown, and continuous integrity scoring.
Assessed to a set standard
The pass mark and grading standard are set independently by the MIFS Board of Standards, applied consistently across every window and every candidate worldwide.
Proven, not just claimed
The integrity of a build examination rests on the integrity of the environment in which it is taken. Before the session begins, the candidate's identity is verified and the workspace is locked down. Throughout the sitting, live invigilation and automated monitoring maintain the conditions under which the model must be built by the candidate alone.
A CFMA credential can be confirmed by anyone, at any time, through the Institute's public no-login verification service. Each credential carries a cryptographically signed verification code and remains revocation-aware.
How verification works →The Sentinel session
- ✓Verified ID. Government identity confirmed before entry.
- ✓Environment lockdown. A controlled, monitored workspace.
- ✓Live invigilation. Human and AI oversight throughout.
- ✓Integrity scoring. Continuous assessment of session conduct.

Who it's for and where it leads
The CFMA is built for professionals whose output is the model. It suits those who value a credential that reflects demonstrated capability rather than examined recall.
Holders use the designation to evidence applied competence to employers and clients, to distinguish themselves in competitive recruitment, and to signal that their modelling meets an independent standard. For firms, the CFMA offers a consistent benchmark for the quality of financial-modelling work across a team.
The credential complements the Institute's analytical charter for those pursuing broader investment roles. Candidates weighing their options can review the full range at Programmes or use the programme selector.
Typical roles
- ✓Investment banking. Analysts and associates building transaction and valuation models.
- ✓Private equity. Professionals structuring and stress-testing buyouts.
- ✓Corporate finance & FP&A. Practitioners forecasting, planning and evaluating decisions.
- ✓Equity research. Analysts producing valuation models to support recommendations.
A model is a professional's argument made in numbers. The CFMA examines whether that argument holds — built live, under proctored conditions, and judged on the work itself.
