CDAF™ — Certificate in Data & AI for Finance

A focused certificate for finance professionals working with data, analytics and machine learning. It certifies practical competence in handling financial data responsibly, applying analytical and machine-learning methods, and governing model and AI risk in line with professional standards.

Programme overview

Data and AI competence, held to a standard

Data and artificial intelligence now sit at the centre of modern finance. The CDAF establishes that a professional can work with financial data rigorously, apply analytical and machine-learning techniques appropriately, and understand where those techniques create model and governance risk.

The certificate is applied and self-contained. It requires no prerequisite and can be earned alongside a role or a longer charter programme. Preparation is self-paced, typically around 90 hours of structured study, and competence is confirmed through a single proctored examination combined with a practical task.

The emphasis throughout is responsible use. The Institute assesses not only whether a candidate can build and interpret an analytical model, but whether they understand its limitations, the data on which it depends, and the standards that govern its deployment in a regulated environment.

What you'll master

The syllabus covers the practical skills a finance professional needs to work with data and AI, alongside the governance and standards that keep that work sound.

  • Data handling for finance. Sourcing, cleaning, structuring and validating financial data; data quality, lineage and the limitations of common datasets.
  • Analytics and interpretation. Applying analytical techniques to financial questions and interpreting results with appropriate scepticism about correlation, bias and overfitting.
  • Machine-learning foundations. Core supervised and unsupervised methods, model training and evaluation, and where machine learning is — and is not — suited to finance problems.
  • Model risk and AI governance. Model validation, monitoring and controls; the governance frameworks that oversee analytical and AI models in regulated firms.
  • Responsible and ethical use. Transparency, explainability, fairness and accountability in the deployment of data and AI, consistent with the MIFS Code of Ethics.
  • Applied practical task. A structured exercise applying data and analytical methods to a realistic finance scenario, assessed alongside the written examination.
Assessment

The exam & how it's proctored

Competence is confirmed by a single proctored examination of approximately two and a half hours, combined with a practical task that requires candidates to apply analytical methods to a realistic finance scenario. The examination tests both conceptual understanding and the judgement needed to use data and AI responsibly.

Every CDAF assessment is delivered under the Meridian Sentinel proctoring system. Sentinel verifies candidate identity, combines live human invigilation with AI monitoring, enforces environment lockdown, and produces an integrity score for each sitting. The Institute holds every candidate to the same conditions, wherever they sit.

This is what allows a MIFS credential to stand behind more than a syllabus. It certifies that the holder passed a genuinely controlled assessment, and the result is recorded as a cryptographically verifiable credential.

Career outcomes

Who it's for and where it leads

The CDAF is designed for professionals whose work increasingly depends on data and analytical tools, and who need a recognised way to prove that competence.

Analysts

Investment, credit and research analysts who work with data and want to apply analytical and machine-learning methods with confidence and rigour.

FP&A and finance teams

Planning, forecasting and finance professionals bringing analytics into budgeting, forecasting and performance work.

Data-adjacent finance roles

Professionals sitting between finance and data functions who need a shared standard of competence and governance.

The certificate signals that a holder can work with financial data responsibly and understands the model and AI risks their work carries. It complements a broader charter such as the CMFA or a risk specialism such as the CFRS, and pairs naturally with the ethics grounding of the CFES.
