Investment analysis
Financial statement analysis, quantitative methods, economics and the frameworks used to assess securities, sectors and markets.
The Institute's flagship charter. A three-level programme in investment analysis, valuation, portfolio management and professional ethics, conferred only on those who prove both competence and integrity.
The Chartered Meridian Financial Analyst credential is the most demanding programme the Institute offers. It is built for professionals who make and defend investment decisions, and it is designed to be proven, not merely claimed.
Candidates progress through three sequential levels, each concluding in a proctored examination administered under the Meridian Sentinel system. The curriculum moves from foundational tools at Level I, through applied analysis and valuation at Level II, to portfolio construction and synthesis at Level III.
The charter is not awarded on examination performance alone. To be conferred, a candidate must pass all three levels, complete 4,000 hours of relevant professional experience, and attest to the MIFS Code of Ethics. This combination — assessed knowledge, demonstrated practice and a binding commitment to conduct — is what gives the CMFA charter its standing among investment professionals worldwide.
Most candidates complete the programme in two to three years. The credential is issued with a cryptographically verifiable code and can be confirmed publicly, without login, by any employer or client.
The CMFA body of knowledge spans the full investment process. It deepens across the three levels, from tools and standards to applied valuation and portfolio synthesis.
Financial statement analysis, quantitative methods, economics and the frameworks used to assess securities, sectors and markets.
Equity and fixed-income valuation, discounted cash flow, relative valuation, derivatives and alternative investments.
Asset allocation, risk and return, portfolio construction, performance evaluation and the management of client mandates.
The MIFS Code of Ethics and the seven Standards of Professional Conduct, applied to real investment situations.
Market structure, instruments and the mechanics of price formation across asset classes and geographies.
At Level III, candidates integrate the full curriculum into coherent, defensible investment recommendations.
Foundational tools. The building blocks of analysis, an introduction to valuation, and a grounding in ethics and standards. Offered in February, June and October.
Applied analysis and valuation. Deeper treatment of asset classes and the application of the toolkit to real securities. Offered in February and August.
Portfolio management and synthesis. Construction of client mandates and integrated investment judgement. Offered in February and August.
Each level concludes in a single proctored examination of approximately four and a half hours. The examinations are set and reviewed by the independent Board of Standards, which owns exam standards, pass marks and curriculum.
Every CMFA examination is administered under the Meridian Sentinel proctoring system. Candidate identity is verified before the session begins. Live human invigilation is combined with AI monitoring, and the testing environment is locked down for the duration of the exam. Each session receives an integrity score.
The resulting credential carries a 75-bit random verification code, is signed with HMAC-SHA256, and can be confirmed by anyone through public, no-login verification.
Examination windows differ by level. Fees are shown per level; the one-time enrolment fee applies to a candidate's first MIFS credential.

The CMFA charter is the recognised standard for professionals who research, value and manage investments. It signals both analytical capability and a commitment to conduct.
Buy-side and sell-side research analysts building the case for securities, sectors and markets.
Portfolio and fund managers responsible for asset allocation and client mandates.
Professionals across asset management firms, wealth managers and institutional investors.
The charter is recognised in more than 90 countries and held by a growing community of credential holders. Because CMFA credentials are cryptographically verifiable, employers and clients can confirm a charterholder's standing directly, at any time, without relying on a claim.
Charterholders join the Institute's community of members and local societies, gaining access to continuing professional development, MIFS Research and a global network of practitioners.
The charter is proof of what a professional can do and how they conduct themselves. Both are tested, and both are required.
